In a move to guide the development of sustainable aquaculture in East Africa, WorldFish has strengthened its research partnership with the Lake Victoria Fishing Organization (LVFO).

A global action plan by FAO with a vision for the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture 2022. “A world in which small-scale artisanal fishers, fish farmers and fish workers are fully recognized and empowered to continue their contributions to human well-being, healthy food systems and poverty eradication through the responsible and sustainable use of fisheries and aquaculture resources.”

Boom and bust on Lake Victoria: Q&A with author Mark Weston. In the 1950s, the British introduced the Nile perch (Lates niloticus) to Victoria’s waters, a gamble designed to boost profits coming out of its colonies.

Thousands of dead fish washed up on shores of Lake Victoria, NEMA issued a statement on Sunday stating that, “preliminary investigations have ruled out the possibility of poison as the cause of the deaths of the fish. The occurrence has been attributed to a drop in oxygen levels. Nile perch is species of fish known to be sensitive to low oxygen levels- (below 2mgl).”

Currently, plastic is at the top of the international agenda for waste management. This study presents the first continental historical analysis of mass importation and consumption of different polymers and plastics (primary and secondary forms, respectively) in Africa and the associated pollution potential. There is no stopping the use of plastic, but certain policies and plastic bag bans could help reduce plastic consumption in the near future, as demonstrated by Rwanda. Link to report here

The aim of the partnership with Agence Française de Développement – the French Development Agency is to encourage more investments in water and sanitation systems. Lake Victoria is steadily being contaminated by sewage, heavy metals and industrial effluent, making it increasingly harder to access clean water. The sensitisation led by Flipflopi is important as it allows people to better understand their part in this shared ecosystem.
