Fisheries Research
With a revolutionary fisheries management at the heart of the reserve we have a great opportunity to study its effects from its beginning. We expect it to have a great impact not only on the environment and fish ecology but also on the socio-economic stability and food security of local communities.
In preparation for the implementation of the Fishing Co-operative and the stepping up in efforts to maintain a fully functioning fish reserve we have begun formulating a research strategy with academic partners and conservation experts. East Africa suffers from limited research data to work with when formulating long term governmental policy as to how its inland fisheries should be managed to maximise their ecological and economical sustainability . We feel it is vital to make reserve management decisions informed by scientific research and hope these results can inform wider decision making on a national level.
Specific data will be gathered by research professionals from academic departments from around the globe coming to Bulago Island to carry out field studies and investigations into how we may better utilise the lake resource. For long term and consistent data capture the local fishermen registered to the reserve will record basic data points which will then be submitted and used in identifying trends and mapping the reserves progress. Even recreational fishermen will be enlisted to capture important data filling out THIS FORM and submitting it to the Kuokoa website.
